Who is eligible for a VA Loan?

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Servicemembers and Veterans, spouses, and other eligible beneficiaries might be eligible for this valuable VA Home Loan Benefit if they meet certain requirements. Check if your service commitment makes you eligible to apply for a VA Home Loan.

If you are a veteran who served during wartime AND

  • You served no less than 90 consecutive days
  • -- OR --
  • You served less than 90 consecutive days and were discharged as a result of a service-connected disability

If you are a veteran who served during peacetime AND

  • You served no less than 181 continuous days
  • -- OR --
  • You served less than 181 days and were discharged as a result of a service-connected disability

If you are an active-duty service member AND

  • After 90 days of continuous active duty, your eligibility can be established

If you are a National Guard or Selected Reserve AND

  • You have a total of 6 years completed in the National Guard or Selected Reserve
  • -- OR --
  • You have less than 6 years completed and were discharged as a result of a service-connected disability

If you are the spouse of a veteran AND

  • You are an unmarried spouse of a service member who died in the line of duty or as a result of a service-related disability
  • You are a surviving spouse who remarried on or after age 57 or on or after December 16, 2003
  • You are a spouse of a Servicemember missing in action or a prisoner of war
  • You are a surviving spouse in receipt of Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
